9 Fun Ways to Promote Team Bonding this Summer

And just like that, we’ve traded our scarves for sunglasses and our Pumpkin Spice Lattes for Unicorn Frappucinos.

Summer is officially here… again!

While summer creates unique opportunities for team bonding activities, happy hours and Nerf gun battles are not everyone’s cup of tea. What constitutes fun varies depending on the unique personalities in your group, but the benefits of disconnecting from work (and connecting with team members) shouldn’t be ignored.

So step away from the daily routine, take advantage of the good weather and find something fun to keep the ties between your team members strong! Capitalize on the positive energy that spills over from the experience and find ways to keep the momentum going when you’re back in the office!

Our friends at the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) are filled with great ideas so we asked them to weigh in on their summer plans.

We’re sure you’ll find some inspiration in their answers!

1. Head to the Beach

We have an awards banquet and retreat to the beach where we honor some of our best employees for the first half of the year. It keeps everyone motivated with something to look forward to in the middle of the year, when the tendency is to dream about being at the beach instead of being in the office.

2. Create a ‘Workcation’ for You and Your Team

Every summer I fly myself and my team to a new European country and rent an Airbnb for five days. There, we have a combination of fun team bonding excursions – last year was skydiving and escape rooms – collaborative work and exploring the city. Team bonding ensues over great meals, creative new ideas and copious libations. Pay for everything. You and your team will leave refreshed, excited and closer as a team.

3. Craft a Company Beer

We are crafting our own company beer on a team-wide trip to Sonoma County, California. Our friends at Barrel Brothers Brewing have agreed to sit our team down for a tasting, learn our palettes and preferences, and then create a customized recipe that captures our team taste profile. The end result is a custom beer in our kitchen that will remind us of our team trip to Sonoma County.

4. Cruise Around the Town or Host a Go-Kart Tourney

We host team off-sites three times a year. So, in the summer, we take advantage of the outdoors by booking fun events: cruises around the city – with food, drinks and music – or golf at the driving range at Chelsea Piers. The team loves it! Looking forward, we’re considering hosting a Nascar-style tournament at a local go-kart track.

5. Cook Together

For our team, we love cooking together. By cooking together, we’re able to work better together as a team, and immediately enjoy the benefits. A wish list for our team is to compete in a cooking competition together. The sense of competition and working together to make something delicious drives us to work on our skills to communicate more.

6. Retreat to the Wilderness

Team bonding begins when people are out of their comfort zone. Our team recently celebrated our company’s five-year anniversary by traveling to Costa Rica. Hiking through the rainforest and sleeping in one big house together was the perfect way to get to know one another on a deeper level. We balanced future planning and fun, rewarding activities that make our company a great place to work.

7. Salsa Your Way to Success

Our headquarters are located in Miami and the Latin influence is pervasive. Our summer success builders include salsa lessons. Even though none of us have Latin heritage, salsa, or any new dance, is a great way for us to get out of our comfort zones and literally get in step with each other. The hierarchy in the office is suspended during dance and laughs lighten the workload.

8. Gather Everyone for a Themed Treasure Hunt

We have excellent communication among our employees and are quick to learn what it is they enjoy. Apart from the events they organize themselves, we as a company have thrown office barbecues, and plan to celebrate our birthday with an open-air party. We are also working on a treasure hunt come summer.

9. Vary Your Summer Parties

We have monthly parties that vary each month. Sometimes it is happy hour, sometimes a lunch event, sometimes soccer bubble ball or other odd events. We try to keep it different, that way it is not the same each time and has something for everyone. We are planning an end-of-summer party to bring all our remote team members together, along with our local team.
