Are You Settling for Okay?
I’m dating myself a bit when I ask if you recall Talking Head’s “Once In a Lifetime.” A great song from my youth in the 1980‘s. In the song David Byrnes wonders how his life became what it is:
“You may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife; You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?”
Ever wonder that when you look at what surrounds your work?
When you look around are you satisfied? Hell, what about happy? Do you feel a sense of joy with your accomplishments? Your team’s accomplishments? What are the quality of your work relationships?
As a manager, I hope for you your answer isn’t the same that Mr. Byrnes cries out:
“You may ask yourself, my God, what have I done?”
It is never too late to decide to not settle and not let the days go by without choosing to make a difference.
Don’t let your role as a manager be characterized as “it just happened this way.” You get to decide if life happens to you or you happen to life. If you choose to happen to life in your role as a manager you choose a path of inspiring employees to find purpose, passion, and results in their work.
Don’t let the days go by. We need more managers willing to step up and reveal the joy found hidden in work.
