The true cause of these toxic traits is management starting with the CEO since everyone follows the CEO’s leadership whether he realizes it or not. Any form of the standard command and control approach to managing people demotivates, demoralizes, and demeans employees causing them to respond in some negative way such as you have explained. The fix is for management to change 180 degrees.

Ben, although I’m sure your books on leadership are well worth a read, I disagree with your viewpoint on this particular subject. The true cause is poor hiring practices. The Hot Mess and the Sociopath are the Hot Mess and Sociopath long before they are exposed to your management. The fix is in your hiring and screening process.

  • There’s a more human way to do business.

In the Social Age, it’s how we engage with customers, collaborators and strategic partners that matters; it’s how we create workplace optimism that sets us apart; it’s how we recruit, retain (and repel) employees that becomes our differentiator. This isn’t a “people first, profits second” movement, but a “profits as a direct result of putting people first” movement.
